Song Lyrics.

In choosing my song, I can now start to gain an idea of how I wish to set my music video out and thus start to create a storyboard.

The lyrics for my chosen song are below:

"Paradise"

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
So she ran away in her sleep
Dreamed of para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Every time she closed her eyes
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
And the bullets catch in her teeth

Life goes on
It gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear, a waterfall
In the night, the stormy night
She closed her eyes
In the night, the stormy night
Away she'd fly.

And dreamed of para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh

She dreamed of para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh.

La la la La
La la la

So lying underneath those stormy skies.
She said oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
I know the sun must set to rise.

This could be para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
This could be para- para- paradise
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh.

This could be para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Could be para- para- paradise
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh.

This could be para- para- paradise
Para- para- paradise
Could be para- para- paradise
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh.

Oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo
Oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo

Colour Scheme.

Due to my chosen genre and song I will have to pick my colour scheme accordingly to the artist and style of genre.  A colour scheme is very important when creating items such as album covers etc. This is because you need a similar house style throughout the artists work. If this is done properly, it will result in a professional style album cover and it will help the artist become recognisable to its potential market/audience.

Moodboard of Target Audience.

Below I have created a moodboard for a visual look at my potential market/audience.

My Chosen Song.

Coldplay - Paradise

Choosing a Target Audience

Target Audience:

With choosing my genre I have eliminated certain groups of people from my target audience.  A younger audience (10 and under) would not be a good target for my audience as most children prefer to listen to the ‘Pop’ genre and music from artists such as ‘Justin Bieber’ or ‘Selena Gomez’.

Thus my music video will be targeted at people both male and female aged approximately from 14 – to late 30’s for people who enjoy the music performed by ‘Coldplay’.  I have also chosen this age groups due to the fact that the song ‘Paradise’ was also identified and is similar to in places to bands such as ‘3OH!3’ which would not be suitable for a very young age.  However, I have decided to have my target audience as young as 14 as ‘Coldplay’ are a popular band which are in the ‘UK’s Official Top 40’ most weeks when they release a new song and/or album.

However, as lot's of older people enjoy 'Coldplay' I have decided to have my target audience to the age of 30.  This is due to the probability of people who enjoy 'Official Top 40' music and as most people listen to this I believe people aged to 30 do also.  Furthermore, this breif questionnaire I asked to a number of people confirmed my initial impression.

Questionnaire:

1) How old are you?
  • 14-18     IIIII IIIII
  • 19-23     IIIII IIIII
  • 24-28     IIIII IIIII
  • 29-33     IIIII IIIII
  • 34-38     IIIII IIIII
  • 39+       IIIII IIIII
2) Do you listen to the 'UK's Official Top 40'?
  • Yes     IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIII
  • No      IIIII IIIII I
3) Do you enjoy listening to 'Coldplay'?
  • Yes     IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII I
  • No         IIIII IIII
4) If 'no' to the last question why?
  • Not my style of music     IIIII IIIII II
  • Too young for me           IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII III
  • Never heard of them       IIIII III
  • Other                           II

From these results it was clear I had to ensure my music video will be based on a younger generation and steer clear from people 30+.

Choosing a Song

I have looked over a number of music videos and lyrics when considering what music video to choose.  Generally, I have been trying to create an idea for each song I have looked over and pictured how I could make a music video based around that song.

The songs I have considered are:

- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Universally Speaking
- Coldplay - Paradise
- Muse - I Belong To You (+Mon Coeur S'ourve A Ta Voix)
- Bruno Mars - It Will Rain
- JayZ and Kayne West - Paris

After much consideration I have decided to use Coldplay's Paradise to create my music video.

Analysis - Music Videos

Is there any common features in the music videos?

There are numerous features which are similar in my music videos these include:

- Genre
- Instruments
- Scenery

The genre used in all of my music videos are some sort of 'rock' genre even if it is mixed with other genres such as 'alternative' or 'funk'.

The use of instruments are very common in my music videos and even to the point in two of my videos - 'The Adventures of Raindance Maggie' and 'New Born' - show the instruments in their videos.

The scenery used is of famous and/or well known places in some of the clips - 'The Adventures of Raindance Maggie' and 'Thriller' are both set in well known places where in contrast 'New Born' is set in a unfamiliar and exotic place.

Analysis - Video 3

Muse - New Born

How is the band represented?

The band is represented in a way which is about a semi-fear of the evolution of technology, and how in reality it's destroying all humanity. The fear is that we can't control it because it's moving faster than we are, so the songs setting the band in a location in the future where the body is no longer important and everyone's plugged into a network. The opening line is 'link it to the world', so it's connecting them on a worldwide scale and being born into another reality, in a way it's on the same lines as the film The Matrix.

Is this similar across the videos by the band?
The music video 'New Born' is different to other music videos by the band, 'Muse', in some ways; the video has the initial impression of what will happen to the future with the advancements in technology?  This is different to other videos as other videos such as 'Knights of Cydonia' have the suggestion to stick up for yourself.  However, the videos are similar due to the idea of there being a meaning behind most of them and normally they are set in rural areas or run down areas like seen in 'Knights of Cydonia' and 'Supermassive Black Hole'.

What relationships exist between images and lyrics in the chosen video?
There is a close relationship between the images and the lyrics in the chosen video 'New Born' as we first see small lights floating around and thus linking the band and the audience to the world.  As the video tells a story the lyrics seem to relate more to the video rather than it would to a video which was not telling a story.

What relationships exist between the music and the images?
The use of close ups to show the expressions on the bands and audiences faces whilst during the video adds to effect the tone of the music.  Furthermore, the images illustrating and emphasizing the idea that they are linked to the world can suggest a relationship between the music and images as the music can be portrayed as to hold suspense.

Are there any inter-textual references to other media forms?
The use of inter-textual references are not seen during this video except the idea of that the song is based around the fear of technology which is widely feared by some people in the world.

Analysis - Video 2

Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Adventures of Raindance Maggie

How is the band represented?
The band 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' are represented as being 'on top of the world' and are being looked up at the crowds of people.  This can be a reference to how they made a 'come back' into the music industry when releasing this song in their new album in 2010 'I'm With You'; this was recently after the depature of their band member Frusciante who was then replaced by the guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer.

Is this similar across the videos by the band?
Throughout most of Red Hot Chili Peppers music videos popular venues such as 'California' are shown throughout.  However, the use of being looked up at by crowds or people is highlighted in 'By The Way' when the main singer is being kidnapped by a crazed fan.  The band is presented in different ways throughout their videos i.e. videos such as 'Californication' and 'Monarchy of Roses' show complete contrasts to the music video 'The Adventures of Raindance Maggie'.

What relationships exist between images and lyrics in the chosen video?
There is little relationship between the images in the music video to the lyrics used in the song.  Red Hot Chili Peppers are known for making entertaining videos which may have little to or no relevence to the lyrics used in the song; this is due to the majority of their music videos having them singing to crowds and/or just performing in general to no one in particular.

What relationships exist between the music and the images?
The music and images have some close links, as the music is thought to be in the genre, 'rock', images of the band jumping around and swinging themselves around links closely to stereotypical ideas of how 'rock' bands would act.  Furthermore, as images show people enjoying themselves in their environment       suggests the idea that the bouncy, upbeat music can further this idea of a relationship existing between both the music and the images seen in the music video.

Are there any inter-textual references to other media forms?
There is only little inter textual references in the music video.  The use of making certain the audience is aware that the video is set in California, on Venice Beach, portrays the idea that so many famous events have happened in California on Venice Beach which makes it so special.  Moreover, the use of showing normal people in the video is a complete contrast as in the media Venice Beach is well known for being home to many celebrities.

Analysis - Video 1

Michael Jackson - Thriller

How is the artist represented?
Michael Jackson is represented as a number of different supernatural creatures during the music video and this is used to illustrate how during the time period lots of horror/thriller films had been released including ‘The Shining’, ‘The Poltergeist’ and ‘Friday 13th’.  This representation of the artist completely showed a alternative point of view to his previous work as one of ‘The Jackson 5’.

Is this similar across the videos by the artist?
Differently, ‘Thriller’ shows a unique change to Michael Jacksons previous videos and illustrated his diversity when performing in his music videos.  ‘Thriller’ is completely contrasted to his previous videos such as with his siblings (in ‘The Jackson 5’), ‘ABC’, ‘I Want You Back’, and music videos he did as a solo artist such as ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Beat It’.  In doing this Jackson gained a wide spread audience and his hit ‘Thriller’ just made him more popular globally.

What relationships exists between images and lyrics in the chosen video?
The lyrics and images are closely related in the video 'Thriller' lyrics such as 'But all the while you hear the creature creeping up behind' is thus emphasised by the video of how Michael Jackson and his girlfriend are being persued by zombies.  Furthermore, this is linked to images in the video and lyrics with the repetition of 'Thriller' as in the 1980's this video would have been seen as a horror short film and was meant to scare the audience.

What relationship exists between the music and images?
The background base is very low and can illustrate the scared feelings the characters are supposed to portray and is added to when in moments during the video - approximately 11 minutes into the video - where the newly found zombie Michael Jackson is chasing his girlfriend and the lyrics have stopped the backing music is used to make the audience feel in suspence of what is happening to the girl and emphasises this with the use of images.

Are there any inter-textual references to other media forms?
In the music video 'Thriller' there is a inter-textual reference to the 1981 film 'An American Werewolf in London' as in the beginning of the scene we see a boy transform into a werewolf and persue his girlfriend and thus attacking her.  Moreover, the use of a 'sprechgesang' (a musical term used to refer to an expressionist vocal technique between singing and speaking) which can be said to be made famous by Vincent Price.  Furthermore, the image of Palace Thriller is used in the video which was rather famous in the 1980's and was made more so by Michael Jackson's music video.

Inspirational Music Directors.

File:Michael.bay.pngAfter looking over a number of musical genius' I have been inspired by the work of - in the music world and the film industry - Michael Bay.

Michael Bay is well known for his directing of the films 'Armageddon', 'Pearl Harbor' and the 'Transformers' franchise.  However, he is also a well credited music video director.

His works such as 'I'd Do Anything For Love' by Meatloaf and 'Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees)' by Aerosmith are just some of his amazing works and with them alone he inspires me in the music world with his directing skills.

Inspirational Video 3

I really like this music video as it shows how you don't need an elaborate music video for it to be a success and it doesn't need C.G.I. or loads of money invested into it.

Inspirational Video 2

Robbie Williams - Radio

I have chosen Radio by Robbie Williams as an inspirational video as the CGI used is effective and the use of a group of dancers (cheerleaders) makes the video more interesting to watch to the choreograph used.

Inspirational Videos 1

Ok Go - Here It Goes Again.

I find the video 'Here It Goes Again' by Ok Go inspirational as with one camera angle it still holds a unique individuality some videos do not have.  Furthermore, the use of props are successfully used and the choreograph used is entertaining and keeps the audience in the video and the music.

Choosing a Genre.

Genre:
Genre is a way of categorising a particular sound according to its content and style.

I have considered a number of genres whilst planning my music video for my A2 coursework.
The genres I have looked at are:
- Indie
- Rock
- Disco
- Funk
- R&B
- Alternative Rock
- Electronic Rock
- Soul

I looked over a variety of different genres to help look at different music videos and the artists with that certain genre.

After much consideration to my genre I have decided to choice a mixture of Rock music which will help me decide on a song which will have been performed by numerous artists such as ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’, ‘Muse’, ‘Coldplay’ and ‘Michael Jackson’.

Music Video or Film Trailer?

At the beginning of my A2 Media coursework, I had to make a decision whether to create a music video or a film trailer. After taking into consideration the conventions of each one, I decided to create a music video. Now I have decided on this, I will need to choose the genre of music I wish to use in my project. It is important that I pick a song that I will not get bored of and that I can listen to a lot, as this will be necessary throughout the production process of my coursework.
